Wesak Day...Belated Post
Horror of horrors! Despite all the effort we made to brave the crowds on Wesak day last May 7th, I have actually forgotten to post something on this blog! I think this is also going to be my longest blog entry ever.

A few of us headed down to Brickfields to catch the Wesak day celebrations and festivities, and we certainly weren't the only ones there that day with a camera!

I'm afraid that I'm woefully ignorant of Buddhist traditions and rituals to be able to offer up any commentary about what exactly these guys were doing, but whatever it was, they were tightly wrapped up in those red cloths and beating away jovially on those drums.

This beggar had taken up [a prone] position at the corner of a stand offering Buddhist books for sale. I thought it was a rather interesting juxtaposition of the beggar in the foreground and the lady in the stand in middle wearing grey who is actually counting money in the shot above!

Ever wondered how they keep all those joss-sticks so neatly organized? Well wonder no more! They had these volunteers going round all day replanting joss-sticks.

These and many other revellers queued up in the sun (ok not hours, but the queue was long) to get a blessing from the monks. This lady and her daughter giggled gleefully as they were doused with holy water.

It seems that umbrella girls work just as well for Formula 1, Motor GP and Buddhism!

Naturally, no such event would be complete without the myriad local food - the vendors were out in full force, including this lovely couple whose name now escapes me who had a stall full of sweet Indian delights for sale.

And why not, some balloons too!

An orderly line of beggars!
